South African Luxury – The Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff, Johannesburg

“There is no passion to be found playing small – in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.” – Nelson Mandela

A profound vitality surges through the streets of Johannesburg, punctuated by the city’s vibrant past and its contribution of the one of the world’s most fearless and inclusive leaders. History is in the air – palpable and vivid.

The city stretches out in all directions and manner of topographies, lush with abundant greenery and varied architecture. And perched high upon a well-positioned cliff, The Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff, offers the traveler the most spectacular station at which to breathe and soak in Johannesburg.

Here is a short YouTube video showing the property.

Entry

Since The Four Seasons Johannesburg spans the face of a natural rock formation, guests enter either at the main entrance at the bottom of the property, or from the top – dramatically I might add if you elect to arrive by private helicopter.

Alas, we did not arrive by private helicopter, but the entry through the main gate is quite exquisite. You will notice the classic architectural lines and accents.

Elevated Garden and Dining

One unique feature of the property is an Elevated Garden and Dining area just beyond the entry, which guests have easy access to upon arrival, offering a lovely space to take in the property after a long journey. I love this part of the property.

Accommodations

We enjoyed an elevated suite, offering endless and dramatic views. The suite was spacious, luxuriously appointed and peaceful. Here are some images of our suite and views:

Views

The Four Seasons Johannesburg offers some of the most spectacular views I’ve seen anywhere, and the property features a vast upper multi-leveled expanse where guests dine, sip cocktails, and enjoy sumptuous panoramic views of the city, dotted with a light wind and the sound of running water. Absolutely breathtaking. We spent at least an hour each day simply sitting in silence. Here is a short video of one of our moments luxuriating in the stunning setting.

Here are some additional images of our time spent overlooking the city:

Spa

The Four Seasons Johannesburg highlights a sublime turquoise-imbued Spa, which exudes tranquility and luxury. The creative display and use of its shimmering water is especially captivating. Here are some images from my visit (and yes, the water was divine):

Dining

The Four Seasons Johannesburg also offers a number of varied and delectable Dining selections and venues, including areas such as The Open Kitchen, Chef’s Table, the Fireplace and Outdoor Grill. It’s impossible to convey the variety of dining experiences and offerings. The food is impossibly fresh, impeccably prepared and the flavors are profound. Here are some images of our dining experiences:

Closing Thoughts

Visiting South Africa has been one of my greatest travel experiences, and Johannesburg imparts to the traveler an energy that reflects the city’s dynamic culture and influential history. And high upon one of its cliffs, the city reveals its majesty, culture and vitality.

I urge you to visit The Four Seasons Johannesburg – stretch out across the elevated patio, order a glass of wine, listen to the water flow over its negative edge, feel your shirt shudder in the breeze, and breathe deeply. All will be revealed to you.
