The ability to travel and experience new places is one of life’s greatest gifts. I have had the opportunity to visit some of the most beautiful destinations in the world, and I recently discovered that one of those destinations rests at the top of an expansive, crimson-washed bluff a scant two hours north from our home in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The Sun Cliff at Red Rock Ranch is a private luxury resort in the middle of Sedona, Arizona’s famous Red Rocks – a one-bedroom casita that features magnificent views and luxurious appointments.

Location
Sun Cliff is about two hours north of Phoenix, with the last 20 minutes delivering you through the astonishing Red Rocks of Sedona. Many of Sun Cliff’s guests visit on a weekend, or during the week for a few days from the surrounding cities in the West; while some visit for longer periods as Sun Cliff is a convenient and quiet destination for recharging from the daily grind.
Sun Cliff – A History
The Sun Cliff at Red Rock Ranch enjoys a rich family history. Kate Joy – owner of Sun Cliff with her husband Tom – received the property in 1980 from her great Aunt Sally Hallermund, who owned and worked the land as a ranch for decades.
The property included Aunt Sally’s “Indian House” – a small casita overlooking Sedona’s majestic landscape. Kate and Tom, in keeping with Aunt Sally’s wishes that the land remain in the family, decided to construct a luxury casita that rivaled the suite of any five-star resort.
It was my absolute pleasure to experience the private resort, and to report that Kate and Tom have built an elegant and timeless masterpiece.

The Property

Private Outdoor Bath
One of most striking features of Sun Cliff is its dramatic private outdoor bath. My wife adores taking baths, and she took multiple splashes in the bath, and it’s not hard to see why – an impossibly peaceful and private setting, otherworldly views, and warm soapy water. Try finding this anywhere else.
Amenities
Sun Cliff takes every opportunity to ensure that guests are well served, which begins with a detailed questionnaire following your booking so that Sun Cliff may provide items such as your preferred beverages and pillow type.
Luxury Experiences
The casita’s full kitchen is perfect for cooks, or – as we prefer – Sun Cliff can arrange for a private chef to prepare your meals. The property also can make arrangements for a Spa experiences, such as having a private massage therapist to visit – Thea from the fabulous A Spa For You, which we experienced as a romantic couples massage, and I highly recommend.
There are a number of additional Luxury Experiences for those seeking to explore the area, such as Slide Rock, horseback riding, helicopter tours, and wine tasting!
Weddings
Sun Cliff’s location and views make for a pristine wedding location and destination, and the property offers a number of Packages and Services to cater to the happy couple.
Closing Thoughts
Travel is a gift. Experiencing new places forever changes your view of the world. But more than that, who you are as a person at the time of your travel experience, inspires your interaction with your new destinations.
Sun Cliff at Red Rock Ranch is more than a private, luxurious resort that offers some of the most exquisite views in the world. Sun Cliff reminds us that we carry with us a way of seeing the world, and that who we are as travelers, echoes through what we experience.
